The series is produced by DreamWorks Animation Television and United Plankton Pictures and premiered on Netflix on August 4, 2016.

Premise[]

Set in 1972, the DeViro family used to be a normal suburban family living in the town of Light City, California until they were subjected to a nuclear accident that caused them to acquire superpowers. The DeViros become a masked crime-fightng team under the name "Awesome Six" and protect Light City from nearby criminals and other enemies using their powers. The family is clad in matching light blue tights, yellow belts, red domino masks and coordinated gloves, boots and trunks, and an "A" emblem in their chests.

The show tells the slice-of-life stories of the DeViros, deals with the family's choices and decisions regarding their superhero identities and their secret identities. The show focuses on physical comedy, emotional storylines, and a large gallery of villains.

Most episodes consist of three 12-minute segments, with the first and third ones being focused on the Awesome Six (usually as a two-part story) and the other one being a separated segment focused on other superheroes (most of them created by other animators): Gum Belle, Superior Fatso, Bear-Man & Badger-Woman, Scarlet Shield, Captain Dynamic & Girl Wonder, Dogboy & Catgirl and the Mouse-Mouse, the Green Beret & the Red Fedora, the Sentais, the Star-Kids, Plastika, Wisecracker, Goodie Girl & Buffet Boy, the International Justice League of Super Acquaintances, the Space Angels, the Ninja Four, and Super Squadron 6000. Other episodes have a 23 half-hour episode format that last a whole Awesome Six segment. In the Drio airings, however, they are all aired as separated shows intead.

Awesome Six

The DeViros/The Awesome Six as seen in the series.

  • Robert DeViro / Awesome Man (voiced by Tom Kenny) - Age 40. The husband of Carol and the father of Mike, Kylie, Ben and Lily. He is the headstrong leader of the family who has always been devoted to finishing anything he starts. His superpowers are flying, cryogenesis, vacuum adaptation, acceleration, and shape-shifting.
  • Caroline "Carol" DeViro / Awesome Woman (voiced by Jill Talley) - Age 34. The wife of Robert and the mother of Mike, Kylie, Ben and Lily. She is just as determined as Robert and can be seen as the glue that holds the family together. She works as a freelance photographer for the Light City Gazette newspaper where the family's crime-fighting is the main news. As a running gag, Robert frequently pats Carol's buttocks shortly after the family don their suits, much to her annoyance. Her superpowers are flying, intangibility, super breath, plant control, and superhuman strength.
  • Michael "Mike" DeViro / Awesome Guy (voiced by Jason Griffith) - Age 14. The teenage son of Robert and Carol as well as the brother of Kylie, Ben and Lily. He often gets into disagreements with Kylie, but loves her all the same. His superpowers are flying, wall-crawling, stretching, electricity manipulation and energy generation.
  • Kylie DeViro / Awesome Gal (voiced by Jessica DiCicco) - Age 15. The teenage daughter of Robert and Carol as well as the sister of Mike, Ben and Lily. She often gets into disagreements with Mike, but loves him all the same. Her superpowers are flying, invisibility, force-field generation, gravity manipulation, and laser vision.
  • Benjamin "Ben" DeViro / Awesome Boy (voiced by Dee Bradley Baker) - Age 6. The youngest son of Robert and Carol as well as the brother of Mike, Kylie and Lily. He is an ambitious youngster who is so eager for adventure that it often gets him into trouble. His superpowers are flying, self-duplication, fire control, weather manipulation, and telekinesis.
  • Lillian "Lily" DeViro / Awesome Girl (voiced by Tara Strong) - Age 6. The youngest daughter of Robert and Carol as well as the sister of Mike, Kylie and Ben. She is much like Ben and has a thirst for adventure that it often gets her into trouble, and she sometimes wants to prove how good of a solo heroine she can be. Her superpowers are flying, bubble generation, sonic scream, super speed, and telepathy.

  • Mr. Publisher (voiced by Fred Tatasciore) - the short-tempered publisher of the Light City Gazette newspaper and Carol's boss, who always sends her to take clear images of the Awesome Six but yelling at her every time she fails to take photos. His main catchphrase is "I'M NOT HAPPY!".
  • Delilah "Doll" Blake (voiced by Jessica DiCicco) - TBD

  • The Mayor (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) - the mayor of Light City. Despite his childish behavior, he cares for the well-being of the citizens and will not hesitate to call upon the Awesome Six whenever something happens that is beyond his control.
  • Alexander "Al" Franklin (voiced by Phil LaMarr) - an African-American teenage boy who is one of Mike's friends. His favorite hobby is pranking and telling jokes.
  • Milo Ashford (voiced by Scott Grimes) - Mike's best friend who is oblivious to the fact that he and his family are superheroes.
  • TBD (voiced by Jennifer Hale) - TBD
  • Alice Woodson (voiced by Tara Strong) - Ben and Lily's best friend and Max's sister. She is a little girl with blonde hair, green eyes, and a pink dress. She is very nice and is willing to help anyone who needs it. Surprisingly, she is not afraid of most insects and spiders and would often take care of them until it's time to let them free, and the same can be said with rats and mice.
  • Max Woodson (voiced by Tom Kenny) - Ben and Lily's second best friend (although he is more of a frenemy due to their usual conflict with him) and Alice's brother. He is a little boy with ginger hair, freckles, an orange t-shirt, and orange shorts. He is a troublemaker as he would skip school, vandalize random people's houses and cars, pranking adults, and even steal candies and sodas from convenience stores.
  • The Idiot Fat Guy (voiced by Bill Fagerbakke) - an unnamed character who is seen in town usually doing something stupid. He is seen as the biggest idiot in Light City. He bears a strong resemblance to idiotic characters from some of Hillenburg's previous series (mainly Patrick Star, Samy Garvin, and Bobo Pussycat).

Villains[]

Awesome Six[]
  • Dr. Ruthless Mauvais (voiced by Nick Kroll) - a German-accented mad scientist who is the main antagonist of the series and the archenemy of the Awesome Six. TBD
    • CR-LP (voiced by Jim Cummings) - Dr. Mauvais' robot sidekick. While he is loyal to his boss, CR-LP's rather cowardly and unintelligent, and also doesn't seem to be as evil as his boss.
  • The Granhampa (voiced by Carlos Alazraqui) - an well-known and highly dangerous crime boss who TBD. Most of the show's one-off villains (usually normal criminals) are seen working to him. He originally appeared in comic books based on both the Dreamtoons franchise and the TV series The Adventures of Hijitus, Hijitus and Goldy, and The Fantastic Family, and this series marks his fourth appearance in animation (the first being the Hijitus and Goldy two-part story arc "Hijitus & Goldy vs. the Granhampa", the second being the 1986 Dreamtoons television special Joey Foils the Granhampa, and the 2015 The Dreamtoons Show episode "Organized Crime Trouble").
  • Professor Neurus and Pucho (voiced by Corey Burton and Carlos Alazraqui) - TBD. They also appear as the main villains in The Adventures of Hijitus and Hijitus and Goldy.
  • Dr. Alien (voiced by Dee Bradley Baker) - a blue alien whose goal is to either destroy or rule Light City. His plans can be pretty stupid sometimes. He is inspired by Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz from Disney's Phineas and Ferb. He also has a space ship that can transport him to other dimensions as he appears as an antagonist in other segments such as Ninja Four, The Star-Kids, and Bear-Man and Badger-Woman.
    • Monitor Monitor (voiced by Jess Harnell) - a robotic monitor lizard who is Dr. Alien's main henchlizard. Before the events of the series, he was created by another evil scientist. However, after only two weeks, Monitor Monitor quit because he wasn't treating him with respect; only using him as a last resort or abusing him. Soon after, he met Dr. Alien and they became best friends, right around the former's first encounter with the Awesome Six. Although very supportive of Dr. Alien's plans, he serves as the straight man. Just like a real monitor lizard, he can swim, climb trees and even use his tail as a weapon. Just like Dr. Alien, he appears as a recurring villain in other segments. To help pay the rent, he heads to other dimensions to work for villains from other segments such as The Fly-Woman from Scarlet Shield.
  • Killion (voiced by Doug Lawrence) - a super-intelligent anthropomorphic pigeon who makes schemes to take over the world but all of them usually end up in defeat due to either the Awesome Six's efforts, his own incompetence and childish nature, or his own small size. He bears a strong personality resemblance to SpongeBob SquarePants character Plankton.
    • Fluffy (voiced by Jill Talley) - an anthropomorphic rat who is Killion's wife who is more competent and intelligent and less childish than his husband, usually being the mastermind in some of Killion's evil plans. She feels annoyed at Killion's attitude and usually gets angry at him for his uncaring and unappreciative nature. Like Killion, she bears a strong personality resemblance to a SpongeBob SquarePants character; in this case Karen, Plankton's computer wife.
    • Night Falcon (voiced by Dan Castellaneta) - an human-sized anthropomorphic falcon who is Killion's sidekick and enjoys spooking people.
  • Master Risk (voiced by Eric Bauza) - TBD. He also appears as the main villain in The Fantastic Family and its 2018 reboot series.
  • Robert McDaniel (voiced by Scott Grimes) - a young man with reddish-brown hair and a mustache, along with a black shirt, jeans, and brown shoes. His goal is to be the greatest burglar and robber in Light City, but fails to do so. He also developed a huge fear of raccoons ever since an incident where he has been attacked by a group of them back when he was a teen.
  • Eugene West/The Wizard (voiced by Hank Azaria) - an escaped death row criminal mastermind who, with his use of advanced gadgets, has special gloves that gives him the ability to shoot lightning bolt blast, able to melt solid steel, and the other glove to control all metal like magneto.
  • Anna Bombette / Miss Atomic Bomb (voiced by Jodi Benson) - a female crime lord who is known for her fascination with nuclear weapons and explosives. TBD
  • Dorothy Kidington (voiced by Jessica DiCicco) - a British-accented eight-year-old super-intelligent girl who is Light City's most dangerous supervillainess, being able to invent various machines and weapons for committing crimes and causing chaos.
  • Jessica Milne/The Peacock (voiced by Ashley Johnson) - a popular teenage girl and Kylie's arch-rival who is extremely selfish and snobby, caring for only herself, and is also a supervillainess/lady thief known as The Peacock.
  • The Villainous Legion of Doom - a team of supervillains bent on taking over the world. They are the more formidable yet usually goofiest opponents for the Awesome Six.
    • Perfuma Soulis (voiced by Taraji P. Henson) - the de facto leader of the Villainous Legion of Doom who has a deep hatred for the Awesome Six, especially Awesome Man and Awesome Woman. TBD
    • King Rajah of Bagla-Khan (voiced by Jim Cummings) - TBD
    • Mind Pies (voiced by Maurice LaMarche) - TBD
    • Hungry Fatso (voiced by Jason Marsden) - TBD
    • Bloody Hailey (voiced by Mila Kunis) - TBD
    • The Duck-Faced Dragon (vocals by Frank Welker) - a large fire-breathing dragon with an orange beak. He serves as the unofficial animal mascot of the Villainous Legion of Doom.
  • The Guzzler (voiced by Thomas F. Wilson) - an idiotic supervillain whose power is to just guzzle stuff and only that as he is consider a nuisance.
  • Mr. Bearsinton (voiced by John DiMaggio) - a gluttonous and vicious mob boss who despises the Awesome Six as he wants to be in charge of Light City.
  • TBD (voiced by TBD) - TBD
  • TBD (voiced by TBD) - TBD

Quotes[]

(Recurring gag that usually occurs after the DeViros suiting up into the Awesome Six)

  • Robert/Awesome Man (patting Carol/Awesome Woman on the buttocks) Wow, these suits really make your butt really big, honey. (he notices Mike/Awesome Guy and Kylie/Awesome Gal covering the eyes of Ben/Awesome Boy and Lily/Awesome Girl respectively, and turns to Carol/Awesome Woman looking at him with an annoyed face) What?
  • Carol/Awesome Woman: (sighs) Nevermind. (she and the family run off) Now, let's go, Awesome Six!

(In the episode "Awesome of Action!"; Robert is watching "Sherlock Pig" on TV)

  • Carol: Robert, are you still up watching TV again? It's nearly midnight. Shouldn't you be in bed for work tomorrow?
  • Robert: Shh! Patient, Carol. I already told you that this is...
  • Robert and Carol: A two-hour marathon of my (Carol: your) all-time favorite primetime program Sherlock Pig.
  • Carol: I know, I know. You've told me that before twice. But seriously, you're happened to notice that you've been doing nothing but sitting on a sofa to watch that same show in all-night through, haven't you?
  • Robert: True, as a fan of this show, I can't even resist.
  • Carol: Well, there's one way you should resist is get this TV off and straight to bed.
  • Robert: Be quiet, hon'. I'll be in bed after this episode ends up, it's new by the way. But for now, this is the final part where Sherlock is figuring out who is the mind behind the fast food restaurant heist.
  • Sherlock Pig: (on TV) Chief, I think I know who is the real thief after I stacked all the three fast food employees in order.
  • Chief: (on TV) You do?
  • Sherlock Pig: (on TV) That's right. The thief who happens to have the mastermind to steal the secret formula of all of the foods, is none other than...

(Suddenly the TV went off)

  • Robert: Hey!
  • Carol: None other than no one.
  • Robert: What gives? I didn't watch who was the real thief.
  • Carol: You can watch it another day. Off to bed.
  • Robert: Ugh, fine!

Trivia[]

  • Awesome Six is considered as Stephen Hillenburg's only two series that doesn't use slapstick humor despite still being a comedy series along with Atomic Puppet.
    • According to Hillenburg himself, he thought Awesome Six to be a good chance to create something different to the "sillier and wackier" style of his previous works and make a superhero TV series in the style of DreamWorks' other superhero animated series such as The Fantastic Family, Radical Rhinos, The Indestructibles!, Volcana, Mighty Girl, and Magical Sisters, as well as the 1999 film Big Five.
    • Hillenburg also confirmed that the series was also inspired by Hanna-Barbera's superhero series such as Birdman and The Galaxy Trio, Fantastic Four, Samsom & Goliath, Frankenstein Jr. and The Impossibles, The Herculoids, Moby Dick and Mighty Mightor, Shazzan, Atom Ant, Hong Kong Phooey, Space Ghost and Dino Boy, the Super Friends shows, and Space Stars in format.
  • Originally, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy from SpongeBob SquarePants, the Indestructible Four from Sailor Cat and Sailor Fish, and Brave Braverton from The Pet Adventures of Lego were supposed to appear in the series and have their own segments, but they got scrapped due to SpongeBob SquarePants being owned by Paramount Global, Ernest Borgnine's death in 2012, Tim Conway's retirement in 2016 and subsequent death in 2019, and difficulties with Indestructible Four and Brave Braverton stories.
  • This is Stephen Hillenburg's only series to use different art styles instead of just one.
  • The series is one of Stephen Hillenburg's few shows to not use music from the APM library after Sailor Cat and Sailor Fish, Jimmy Two-Shoes, The Pet Adventures of Lego, and some episodes of The Doggies. Instead, the show's music is composed by Lolita Ritmanis.
  • While still being a great success, the show got a brief controversy due to the Awesome Six's suits being too similar to the suit worn by DC Comics' signature character Superman.
  • TBD
  • According to the ending credits, the series' segments were created by these animators:
    • Stephen Hillenburg (Awesome Six, Super Squadron 6000, Wisecracker, The International Justice League of Super Acquaintances, and The Green Beret and the Red Fedora)
    • Paul Tibbit (Ninja Four, The Space Angels, Plastika, and The Sentais)
    • Craig McCracken and Lauren Faust (Scarlet Shield, Gum Belle, Dogboy & Catgirl, Bear-Man and Badger-Woman, The Star-Kids, Superior Fatso, Goodie Girl and Buffet Boy, and Captain Dynamic and Girl Wonder)

  • Due to its 14-season run from 2016 to 2020, Awesome Six became one of the longest-running Netflix original series in terms of seasons and episodes and one of DreamWorks' longest-running shows until its final 14th season.
